What is the AM-platform?

The AM-platform is a free of charge virtual central European area for all subject related to Additive Manufacturing (hereafter named AM)

The objective of the AM-platform is to contribute to a coherent strategy, understanding, development, dissemination and exploitation of AM.

AM is fragmented. Lots of organizations are working or doing research in this area but there is no coherent strategy and several interpret the subject differently. There is no central organization or place for peoples to for instance ask questions, to start a discussion, to find expertise, or to up- or download an interesting paper or article.

This platform helps to achieve the Lisbon & Gothenburg objectives as defined by the EC (to become the most dynamic and most competitive knowledge-based economy by 2010 and achieving sustainability by 2030).

The AM-platform is active since 2007 (formerly as the RM-platform)

Additive Manufacturing in The Economist

In The Economist edition Apr 21st 2012, a special report has been incorporated on the third  industrial revolution. The article deals with the digitalisation of the industrial production, enabling mass customisation.

3D-printing and Additive Manufacturing play a key role to enable this. Also, a new concept of manufacturing is mentioned, i.e. the TNO Printvalley machine.

Quote of The Economist: Can it be done? Yes: TNO makes it happen! “Can it be done? Back to the EuroMold exhibition, where TNO, an independent research group based in the Netherlands, showed a novel machine with 100 platforms travelling around a carousel in a continuous loop. A variety of 3D-printing heads would deposit plastics, metals or ceramics onto each platform as they pass to make complete products, layer by layer. Scale up the idea, straighten out the carousel and you have a production line with multiple printing heads.”
